They also explored the impact of past experiences on our perceptions and emotions, and the role of coaching in personal growth. Lastly, Lisa shared her upcoming book and projects, emphasizing the value of curiosity, embracing change, and developing core values for sustainable adaptation.
Discussing Authenticity and Embracing Fullness Ralitza and Lisa discussed the concept of authenticity and how it evolves over time. Lisa shared her journey of seeking authenticity, which led her to understand that it's not about defining oneself with specific traits, but about embracing one's fullness and showing up authentically in the present moment. Ralitza agreed, highlighting that authenticity is a fluid state that shifts with one's environment and personal growth. They also discussed the importance of being in the right community to support and explore one's authenticity.
Learning Authenticity From Horses Lisa shared her profound experience with working with horses and the valuable lessons she learned about authenticity and congruence. She emphasized the importance of being true to oneself in the present moment, a concept she learned through her interactions with the horses. Ralitza found the conversation insightful and thought-provoking, noting its relevance to various aspects of life, including relationships and personal development. Both agreed on the potential for individuals to learn from the animal kingdom and the need for authenticity in all aspects of life.
Safety Awareness and Supportive Communities Lisa and Ralitza discussed the importance of establishing safety in different environments. Lisa emphasized the need for developing awareness to increase safety and reduce patterns of hypervigilance, while Ralitza shared her experiences of living in places where safety was a constant concern. They both agreed on the importance of being able to let one's guard down in a safe environment, and the value of having a supportive community that promotes safety and respects personal boundaries.
Authenticity, Vulnerability, and Emotions Ralitza emphasized the importance of authenticity and vulnerability in a hyper-vigilant environment, reflecting on the paradoxical discomfort people often feel when they can't be their true selves. She also highlighted the societal expectation of men not to express their emotions, suggesting this as a potential barrier to authenticity. Lisa then introduced the concept of 'constructed emotion' proposed by Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett, explaining how emotions are predictive responses based on bodily imbalances and past experiences. Both Ralitza and Lisa underscored the significance of understanding and managing emotions for overall well-being and authenticity.
Past Experiences, Brain Predictions, and Coaching Lisa and Ralitza discussed the role of past experiences in shaping our predictive brain and how it impacts our capacity to recall and utilize new experiences. They considered the example of veterans returning from war who experience PTSD and how their system misinterprets non-threatening situations due to their heightened state of hypervigilance. Lisa suggested that men, due to having less tangible experiences, may be less able to recall and adapt to new situations. Ralitza emphasized the importance of coaching as an impartial perspective that can help individuals grow and develop.
Authenticity, Boundaries, and Personal Growth Ralitza and Lisa discussed the importance of authenticity, boundaries, and safety in personal growth and relationships. They explored the idea that true authenticity involves being true to oneself while also respecting the boundaries of others. Jose Angel Pereira Ruimwyk was wrongfully detained and held captive in Venezuela for nearly five years, from November 21, 2017, to October 1, 2022.
Pereira was one member of the so-called CITGO6. His only crime was that he is an American. Before he was taken hostage, Pereira spent thirty-five years as an oil company executive and CEO of Citgo Petroleum. While at the top of his career as Citgo’s CEO (the sixth biggest refinery complex in the US), Pereira was called to attend a business meeting in Caracas at Petroleum of Venezuela (PDVSA)—(the parent company of Citgo)— headquarters. On that day, the Venezuelan regime accused him of corruption, espionage, and treason, among other false charges, and captured and imprisoned him. This nightmare lasted 1,775 days—four years and eight long months.
After the United States Government orchestrated his release, Pereira turned his focus to advocating and supporting hostage families enduring similar nightmares and broken processes. His experience made it clear that what he survived can help others that are struggling to be able to overcome, thrive, and succeed in any circumstance. He now speaks to spread a message of resilience, hope, faith, and survival. Pereira is proof that we can conquer anything. He works to combine his career and life experiences with his strategic planning and relentless mindset approach to coach others through seeming insurmountable situations. He calls this program: LIFE PILLS FOR A SURVIVAL GUIDE (LPSG).
To learn more about his history you can watch his interview with Anderson Cooper here:
On this episode of the Authenticity Calling Podcast, Jose shares what kept him not only alive, but hopeful, during his nearly five years of wrongful imprisonment, including an entire year of solitary confinement, where he reflects, he lost track of the days. We reflect that many of us are trapped in our own mental, emotional, spiritual and physical jail cell and we HAVE A CHOICE.
It all starts with thinking positive, despite all evidence to the contrary and what life shows us, if we continue to keep our mind on the prize, the vision, and the light at the end of the tunnel, we can make it through just about anything. Jose shares how his positive thinking, creating deep and meaningful connections, writing, focusing on his mental and physical health, reading, praying and even having some fun, were pivotal to his survival in prison. Jose notes that most importantly and unforgettably, his spirituality is what truly impacted his ability to do it all.
The letters Jose wrote to his wife and had to sneak in and out of prison are what gave him the hope to look forward to future days, and are the essence of his upcoming book, "From Hero to Villain, My true story of the Citgo6". Undoubtedly an emotional and powerful story of leadership, hope and resilience in the face of what was for some, a hopeless situation.
